Craft of Fiction: Fiction and the Visual

In this class, we'll explore intersections of literature and the visual, from essays about image/text to fiction about visual artists and visual art by writers. We'll look at work (not all of it fiction) by people like Renee Gladman, John Keene, Erica Baum, W.G. Sebald, and Cesar Aira. Throughout the semester, students will create writing that is in some meaningful way shaped by the visual (be that description, ekphrasis, illustration, a story about standing in front of a painting in a museum trying to decide if you should kiss your date, etc.). Our investigation will be driven by a generative inquiry into the many ways a purposeful intersection of art forms can open up expressive possibilities. For undergraduates, a previous 300-level creative wiring course is required. This course counts toward the Creative Writing Concentration. Please be aware that this course enrolls directly from the waitlist to preserve seats for incoming MFA students; students aren't enrolled until notified by the instructor.
