In this class we will read a number of poetic texts in translation, while exploring questions of translation, such as: who gets translated and why, what makes a good translation, how would YOU translate this same poem, who would you choose to translate if you could? Machado, Philoctetes by Sophocles, translated by Carl Phillips, and others. The class will include occasional visits by translators who will discuss their process and the challenges of translating a particular text. Students will have the opportunity to translate poems using the support of online resources such as bilingual dictionaries and neural machine translation programs. Fluency in a second language is not required.
