Whether trying to protect it from "degradation" or to expand its vocabulary; whether trying to acquire it in order to gain access to first-world privileges or to resist its replacement of indigenous languages; whether celebrating its elasticity or predicting its demise--people the world over feel strongly about the English language. We will examine the linguistic changes in English over time, beginning with Old English. We will look at dictionary entries, spelling books, and punctuation manuals. We will also think about English as ideology, looking at past and current writings about "correct" English grammar.
