Cultural Journalism

WRITING 373

This course takes as its object the craft of writing short form cultural journalist pieces. What is called "short form" traditionally applies to work under two thousand words, but can encompass a variety of formats in print and online forums, such as profiles, reviews, interviews, think pieces, features, along with more sustained criticism of media, literature, film, and the arts. We will explore a robust array of styles and perspectives, while honing our own distinct voices in a workshop environment. Students will have the weekly opportunity to experiment with these forms in their journals, choosing 2-3 forms for their three formal essays. This course does not count toward the Creative Writing Concentration.
