Topics in English & American Literature:Contemporary Literature of the East West Divide

ENGLISH LITERATURE 311

This course explores literary modernism as a traveling culture. Resisting a center/periphery model of thinking about modernity and its attending literary modernisms, the course focuses on the circulation, interaction, and cross-fertilization of texts in the modernist tradition. We comparatively pair authors like Virginia Woolf and Marcel Proust, Franz Kafka and Lu Xun, William Faulkner and Juan Rulfo. What brings this diverse body of literature together under the umbrella of modernism? What are modernismĀ“s formal traits and thematic obsessions? On what trajectories does modernism travel and to what effect? We will consider modernist literatureĀ“s dialogue with photography, chronophotograhy and cinema. The course satisfies the Twentieth Century requirement.
