ENGLISH LITERATURE 420

A reading of three novellas--Daisy Miller (1878), An International Episode (1878), and The Aspern Papers (1888)--and two major novels--The Portrait of a Lady (1881) and The Ambassadors (1903)--by America's most prominent self-imposed literary exile of the late nineteenth century, this class will focus on how James represented gender, class, and identity from an in-between perspective that was neither conventionally American nor European. Modeling cultural mobility, cosmopolitanism and detachment as elements of a new transatlantic modernity, these works also explore the limits of the art of fiction. Satisfies the Nineteenth Century requirement.
