Hughes Fitzgerald is a first-year PhD student interested in more broadly 20th- and 21st- century African American literature and art. His current research interests primarily focus on conceiving the lyric as a performative—and often sonic—threat and staging ground for radical Black protest from the Harlem Renaissance to the movement for Black Lives.
